OK. So in S2, John Winchester makes a demon deal to save Dean’s life, thereby dooming himself to Hell, losing the Colt, and ensuring Azazel lives for that extra bit longer, which is another way of saying Ugly Shit Happens. Only, here’s the thing: Dean is Michael’s vessel. He quite expressly *can’t* die - not permanently, anyway. It’s why Castiel pulls him out of Hell at the start of S4, and why Zachariah later threatens to resurrect Dean if he tries to use death as a way to cheat the Apocalypse. Which means that John didn’t *need* to make a demon deal to save Dean’s life - he was always going to come back.

Which, on one level, is pretty fucked up. But consider this: the angels didn’t want to show their hand early, and according to Alastair, the righteous man who sheds blood in Hell, the one who was *originally* intended to kickstart the Apocalypse? That was meant to be John, not Dean - and in order for that to happen, John needed to go to Hell.

You know who else wanted the Apocalypse to happen? Angels. Which means that, if Alastair wasn’t lying, then angels also wanted John to go to Hell. Which means they needed him to make the demon deal.

You know how Dean knew John was possessed by Azazel? Because John said he was proud of him. Which is also, coincidentally, the same thing John said right before he died - which is why Dean asked if it was really him saying it. And we already know that Michael can possess John - we’ve seen him do it before, when John was younger, so Michael already has his consent. And as much as John Winchester loves his sons, it’s hard to see him dealing with Azazel.

But what if it wasn’t really John Winchester who made the demon deal? What if Michael took possession of him, made the deal in his place to ensure John went to Hell - the better to start the Apocalypse - and to save Dean’s life without revealing himself? What if it wasn’t John telling Dean he was proud of him, but Michael? What if it was Michael who told Dean he’d have to kill Sam, because he knew he was Lucifer’s vessel?

What if Michael killed John?
