muddlewait asked: I thought I saw somewhere that you'd never actually read the Lord of the Rings -- and you still speak Quenya? That's mind-blowingly awesome, but holy crap. Assuming I'm remembering right, would you talk about why/how this came to be? -sits by fire-
It was high school. I was bored.
This is the start of like, 9,000 stories that end with me acquiring a useless or semi-useless skill.
I feel obligated to ask you to preface all of them with “No shit, there I was” in Quenya, or some other fictional-but-now-real-ish language.
(I have to assume there’s probably a pithy Klingon phrase for it already…)
When I was bored in class, which was often, I used to make up alphabets, memorise them, and then write in them for the rest of the day.
This practise came to an unfortunate end at age fifteen, when my physics teacher took a dim view of my using the alphabet I’d made up in that day’s geography lesson to answer part of a test she’d set us - I alternated it with normal English every second written line. The fact that I still passed the test was apparently neither here nor there; I was given a very stern talking-to by the head of the science department, and then issued a Saturday detention when I failed to show the appropriate amount of contrition (viz: any).
The moral of this story is, beware of bored geeks in school, for we find many and various ways to amuse ourselves. That, or revert to behaviours that border on self-harm: my final year of primary school, I was so bored at covering material I’d already aced the first time (I skipped year five but did year six twice, because I decided I didn’t want to go to high school without my friends) that I starting pulling out my hair, on purpose, and ended up with a bald spot in the centre of my head.
