twelve rules to live by, or: if i were king

1. Your limbs, blood and organs are wholly your own; even at the expense of others, nobody may command their use but you. You are the quartermaster, not the supply cupboard.

2. You are entitled to be ignorant only when your ignorance harms nobody, or yourself alone; even so, strangers are not obliged to teach you. They no more owe you their time and expertise than you owe them yours.

3. If the equal rights of different persons are pitched against each other, consider who risks the most by a negative ruling. All people are born equal, but all situations are not.

4. Life is a gift, but that doesn’t mean the givers can dictate your usage of it. Repay them instead by living well, whatever that means for you.

5. Every child, regardless of age, wealth or parentage, deserves to be loved, safe, fed, housed, educated and kept healthy. The state can’t love, and despite its best efforts, it can’t always guarantee safety; nonetheless, it can and should provide the rest, especially when parents cannot.

6. Morality should be rigid enough to constitute a yardstick for right action, yet supple enough to allow for the absolute inevitability of human weakness. If you cannot tolerate failure, you have already failed yourself.

7. Equality is no more dependent on homogeneity than validity is dependent on ubiquity. Red is not blue, but both are colours of varying shades on an intersecting spectrum.

8. Mutual, informed consent between adults is the most important aspect of sex, regardless of physicality, orientation, kink or preference. Where mutual, informed consent exists between adults, no sexual activity can be considered illegal.

9. We all have the right to determine and proclaim our own personhood. In matters of self-identification, biology is not sovereign over psyche.

10. Order is valuable precisely because change is inevitable. Life occurs in the space between stagnation and chaos.

11. Freedom is a right that demands responsibility. As with magic: first, do no harm.

12. If you can’t help, don’t hinder. Not every situation demands your input, and sometimes, the best and only thing you can offer is silence.
