omg that girl Roshini from the Axe Apollo Space Race thing is winning right now SHE’S WINNING
She definitely wasn’t before when I voted earlier, given the number of notes that post has I hazard a guess that it really was Tumblr that bumped her up, that’s amazing. (The other contestants numbers have barely budged.)
Amazing. I just had my friend Ishyhara Rio call me in tears not knowing why he went from tying for first to having no chance at fulfilling his dream.
Amazing. The guy who didn’t make sexist comments, who didn’t even know that this was going on, and who doesn’t have a Tumblr so can’t fight back is going to have his dream shattered for a political cause, not for personal reasons.
Amazing. no one has the common decency to explain to him why they have broken his dreams. The real person on the other side of that screen who has no idea or notion of why this has been done to him.
Amazing
I feel awful for Ishyahara Rio and the other contestants…
It is true that the sexism that she was facing was unfair and uncalled for and probably played a role in her losing rank.
But the fact that so many people voted for her just because she was a girl, ignoring the fact that all the contestants had worked very hard for where they were… that is unfair, and it is sexist, because then she just becomes “girl”, not Roshini. I wonder how many of those 30,000 people who voted for her saw her as Roshini and recognized her efforts in comparison to those around her and her fellow contestants, and who just saw her as “the girl” and would have voted equally for any girl in her place.
And the other contestants worked just as hard for their spot, and to have it thrown away just because they weren’t born female…. well, that’s completely unfair.
“Just because they weren’t born female” is a bit of a loaded statement. This is the way women have felt…since practically forever.
This is role reversal of what sexism has been since the dawn of its existence. It is unfair. But you notice that she was losing terribly before this started—that was because of sexism as well. Why is that worse? Well, because it is the precedent. Nobody wants to live in a world where sexism has been completely reversed, and men always discriminated against for their gender. But I ASSURE you we are not living in that world, or anywhere near it. There are some cases of such discrimination, which are no less horrible for their infrequency, but the majority of the victims of sexim are women.
The thing is that if she wins, it will mean so much to girls who are told they can’t do something because it’s just for men. The list of things men are told they cannot do because “it’s just for girls” is smaller and much more menial.
You say we vote for her just because she’s female, and that we don’t know her. But what we did know about her was that she faced sexism to get into the competition, and during it, was losing because of it, and said she wanted to continue because girls shouldn’t be told they can’t do something because of their gender. That is admirable and inspiring, and seems like a very good reason to vote for Roshini specifically.
Only one person was ever going to win. If she does win, three of the runners up would have been in the same position anyway. It doesn’t seem all that unbalanced or unfair, because that is what contests are like.
On the other hand, this was never about the other contestants not deserving to win. And I do hope, and I can’t express how much because this is just writing, I really hope they all get another chance throughout their lifetimes to fulfill their dream or otherwise have the great life they deserve.

Nicely worded, catfishcafe. *claps*
And remember. She was dragged down in the first place because she’s a girl.
If you wanna beat us down ‘cos we’re girls, we will fight like girls.
GO TEAM ROSE FOR SPACE!
As heartbreaking as it must be to think you were in the lead for something like this and then find yourself overtaken, anyone who thinks they’re so entitled to win a popularity contest that losing constitutes a theft of something they owned or were owed is missing the point. Because that’s what this is: a popularity contest. Prior to Roshini being in the lead, do you really think that every voter was watching through all the videos in turn, sitting back and then making an informed decision - a decision that just so happened to leave her trailing by an extraordinary margin? Do you really think nobody was being directed to vote for a specific contestant because someone else had asked them to or assured them they deserved to win? Do really think nobody was voting AGAINST Roshini on principle? What planet do you live on? Because wherever it is, I don’t think NASA will be sending astronauts there any time soon.
When Axe first announced their contest, it was explicitly aimed at men; women had to argue for their right to actually enter, and even that caused a stir. None of the male contestants has been told that their gender prohibits them from being an astronaut; nobody has said they don’t deserve to be there because of who they are. So right from the outset, we know that Rose has already endured more abuse, more criticism and more setbacks than any of her male competitors just by being there; and we know she’s needed more courage, determination and ambition to even apply in the first place. How is that not a valid reason to vote for her?
You want to complain about something? Complain about the fact that Axe created a contest for men that was meant to be a leg-up into an already male-dominated profession, and then had the gall to look surprised when women went, Hey, you know who could really use some help to become astronauts? US. Complain about the fact that only one woman made it through to the final round - because if Roshini was competing against another woman, your argument that we’re all just voting for ‘the girl’ would be invalid. But don’t complain that your favoured competitor is losing a popularity contest just because someone else has proved to be more popular - because that’s how popularity contests work.
If one of the male contestants wins, it’ll matter to them, to their friends and families, and maybe to some of their voters. There’ll be media coverage, and then we’ll forget about it. But if Rose wins, it’ll matter to millions of girls and women who’ve been told their whole lives that some dreams exist beyond their reach; and it’ll send a powerful message to corporations and advertisers who think they can exclude us from their contests just because they think we’re less important. We’re voting for Roshini, not because she’s 'just a girl’, but because she’s a woman who was brave enough to reach for something everyone told her she couldn’t have, and we genuinely want to see her achieve it.
