Honk the Peacock
My godmother lives in Australia quite near the bush, which means there are lots of animals in their area. Seeing the odd wandering dog or stray cat around the place isn’t unusual - but one day, this random peacock showed up on her property. She has no idea where it came from; nobody nearby owns or farms them, and peacocks aren’t exactly indigenous fauna. But she started feeding it, and now it lives with her family as a sort of pet.
They named him Honk, on account of the fact that he won’t shut up.
Because Honk is lonely. There are no peahens nearby for him to impress, but being birdbrained, he hasn’t cottoned on to this fact, and seems to think the ladies are just avoiding him because he isn’t loud or shiny enough. He spends hours and hours grooming his tail, and during the mating season, he just runs around outside their house, yelling. He was a juvenile when he first showed up, but now he’s fully grown, and increasingly determined to prove his worth through the winning combination of glossy feathers and noise.
There’s no real point to this story. I just like the fact that my godmother has a random peacock named Honk.
