Top 10 Animated Kids’ Films

Ordered by year of release:

1. Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind (Studio Ghibli, 1984)

Everything about this film is perfect, and if you don’t cry at the end when Nausicaa tries to rescue the baby Ohmu, there’s something wrong with you.

2. Balto (Universal, 1995)

“Not a dog. Not a wolf. All he knows is what he is not.”

3. Pocahontas (Disney, 1995)

Problematic in terms of First Nations representation, but the music, especially Colours of the Wind and Drums of War, still gives me chills.

4. Princess Mononoke(Studio Ghibli, 1997)

Moro. Lady Eboshi. Mononoke. Ashitaka. Need I say more?

5. Mulan (Disney, 1998)

Problematic again, but damn, that character arc. Plus and also: “Dishonour! Dishonour on you, dishonour on your cow- ”

6. The Road to El Dorado (DreamWorks, 2000)

Any film whose opening gambit puts Kenneth Brannagh and Kevin Kline together as voice actors, then teams them up with a sassy horse and an awesome WOC is pretty much bound to be made of win.

7. The Incredibles (Pixar, 2004)

I don’t care what anyone says, the plane scene is fucking flawless, and I’ll fight anyone who thinks otherwise. Also: EDNA MODE, people.

8. The Secret of Kells (Vivi Film, 2009)

One of the most beautiful soundtracks in history, plus perfect everything else.

9. How to Train Your Dragon (DreamWorks, 2010)

Humour. Vikings. Dragons. Pitch-perfect emotional tension. Successful at All The Things.

10. The Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki (Studio Chizu, 2012)

Want a four-minute recap to convince you to watch the whole thing? Try this. Don’t worry, you’re not crying - it’s just raining on your face.

Note: This list could quite easily consist of nothing but Studio Ghibli films, but in the interest of variety, I’ve gone with just my two favourites.

  2. jhameia said: Plus the guys in El Dorado were initially written to be gay.
