Okay can I just say please how much I would enjoy having a cis female hero who says she does not want children and then DOES NOT CHANGE HER MIND
Kristin Cashore is the only…
In Banner of the Damned the main character is asexual and has no interest in procreating that I can think of. I’m thinking through the four books of INDA, and I’m sure there must be an example there but I can’t come up with one offhand. Smith does tons of interesting things with gender and sex, so embedded in the story that it’s easy to overlook it. I wish she was more widely read.
Nyx from Kameron Hurley’s God’s War sells her womb in the opening paragraphs, and talks about never wanting kids; it’s definitely an awesome book. I’ll second the rec about Privilege of the Sword, which is brilliant, but as for other awesome childless genre ladies: there’s also Samarkar from Elizabeth Bear’s Range of Ghosts, who willingly trades her fertility for magic at the start of the book; Katharine Kerr’s Nola O'Grady, who agrees with her partner never to have kids as neither of them want to be parents, plus Jill from her Deverry series; Mira Grant’s Georgia Mason from the Rising trilogy; and Edie Bannister from Nick Harkaway’s Angelmaker, who’s one of my favourite fictional ladies ever. (Not sure about Phaedre from Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Dart, as I’ve only read the first book in the series, but possibly she qualifies; ditto for Sarah Tolerance from Madeline Robbin’s series of the same name.) There’s probably more, but can’t think of them off the top of my head.
