abriefhistoryofwhoilove asked: Thanks for responding! I absolutely agree with you on the love/hate thing. 100% However I feel like a lot of people bash him for a lot of things and often just look for things that are wrong with his writing without analyzing it as a whole. I'll be the first to admit that there's plenty wrong with his writing. (Biggest issue was with series 6 as i mentioned) . But I don't think that all of those things take away from who he is as a writer. Because, as you said, we have had some fantastic stories
For me, the thing with Moffat is, he’s disappointed me enough times about things I consider important that I’ve lost all inclination and ability to give him a pass when his subsequent problems veer into similar territory, even if it’s to a much lesser extent. For example: he’s treated his female characters so badly that I’m no longer willing to give him the benefit of the doubt even for small irks now, because on that front, I’ve got no more tolerance left with which to cushion the blow. And I LOVED Amelia at the start of Season 5; I loved that Amy was the one who talked the Doctor down from killing the starwhale; I loved that very first episode with River back in S4. But since then, he’s done so much I dislike that all that goodwill those moments brought me has evaporated, so that even a little misstep sets my teeth on edge.
It’s like… OK. For me, engaging with narrative is like going for a drive: the road beneath is the story, and the car is the writer’s skill. Sometimes, the road is totally smooth, but the car is really terrible - bad writing paired with a really good story. That’s always a bit disappointing, because you know that the same idea in more skilled hands would’ve been utterly mindblowing, but even if the ride was a bit jarring, the overall experience was still pleasant. But then there’s the opposite scenario: good car, but a bumpy, badly-made road. With that combination, you have to rely entirely on the car’s suspension - your faith in the writer - to carry you over the bumps. But the rougher the road and the longer you’re stuck on a rocky stretch, the higher the likelihood that the car will suffer permanent damage: every rock and cobble weakens the suspension, so that past a certain point, there’s nothing left to cushion your discomfort.
That’s how I feel about Moffat: his sexism and laziness strews rocks and pitfalls along what should otherwise be a smooth road, and after two seasons, my suspension of disbelief is shot - there’s no faith left to cushion the inevitable blows.
