What Happens Next: A Gallimaufry

melancholic romantic comic cynic. bi & genderqueer. fantasy writer. sysrae on ao3.

it really is that simple

Just now, walking my 5 year old son home from school, the following conversation happened:

Son: Mummy, when are you going to get a toy girl Transformer?

Me: I don’t know; I hadn’t been planning on getting one.

Son: You should get two girls that can govine!

Me: Combine.

Son: Com-bine. You should get two girls that can combine!

Me: That would be pretty cool.

Son: There’s Strongarm, Bumblebee - wait, Bumblebee’s not a girl!

Me: No, but he is pretty cool.

Son: Yeah. So there’s Strongarm, Windblade, uh…

Me: Arcee?

Son: Arcee, yeah. [pauses] Huh. That’s all the girl Transformers. There’s really not many.

Me: No, there’s not. There should be more girls, I think.

Son: There should be girl Decepticons, too! More girl Decepticons AND Autobots!

Me: I agree.

Son: [frowning, puzzled] Why aren’t there any more girls, mummy?

Me: Because the people who made it didn’t think to put them there.

Son: Mummy, Transformers weren’t made by someone. They were created on Cybertron!

Me: Yes, in the show. But the show is a story, and the story was made by someone, right?

Son: Yeah?

Me: And sometimes, when people make stories, they leave girls out, which I don’t like. It’s sexist.

Son: I like boys AND girls!

Me: I like boys and girls, too.

And then he ran inside, because we were home by then, and asked if he could have an afternoon snack.

Representing women on screen: so simple a five year old can independently reason out why it’s important and how to fix it. Adults have no excuse.
