I haven’t seen any posts on this as of yet so I figured I may as well make it.

Pictured above is 16 year old Aretha Brown, an Aboriginal Australian who stood up and spoke to 50 000 people on January 26th, a day publicly celebrated as Australia day.

However, it’s a date that has been regarded as ‘invasion day’ or ‘survival day’ by Australian Aboriginals as January 26th is the date that Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay, and the genocide of Aboriginal Australians began.

Aboriginals and allies alike have been attempting to get the date of Australia day changed, the most recent date suggestion I’ve heard is May 8 (”mate” phonetically).

#changethedate is an ongoing issue that we have been struggling with for years.

The genocide of Aboriginal Australians has been almost entirely brushed off in recent years by Australia’s leaders, like the previous Prime Minister referring to Australia as ‘nothing but bush’ before the English arrived, and entirely disregarding the existence of a people who inhabited the continent for 40 000 years prior to the very first ‘Australia Day’.

#changethedate is an important, ongoing struggle to allow Aboriginal Australian’s to mourn the genocide of their people.

No pride in genocide.
