why do the worst people on earth describe themselves as logical

Because if you call yourself “logical” and convince yourself that it’s true, you can absolve yourself of moral or intellectual responsibility for your words, actions, and beliefs.

“I’m a logical person,” says the douchebag, whilst sending hateful messages to women over the internet. “I’m doing the logical thing,” he continues as he doxxes an indie game dev because they’re too SJW for his liking. “I’m a good person,” he affirms to himself, while being The Worst Person.

this is actually a really good explanation

They also believe being logical is the same as being right when in fact logic is only a measure of internal consistency and not veracity.

The biggest joke is that they often aren’t even employing logic, they’re just disapproving of inconvenient emotional responses from the people who have to deal with their shit.

For real, this mentality 100% describes my douchebag ex. He was convinced that, because he “knew” himself to be a rational, logical person, he was therefore incapable of being irrational or illogical, which basically meant that he argued his motive backwards from his actions: “I did this, and I am rational, therefore my motive was rational, QED”. In practice, this meant he could change his mind about whether or not he should keep his car because Peak Oil Was Coming seven times in the course of a twenty minute drive, and whatever position he landed on when we arrived at our destination was therefore the logical one; so logical, in fact, that obviously he’d believed it all along, and had never really changed his mind in the first place. He would literally deny having had that conversation as soon as it ended and scoff at me for daring to suggest it was a behavioural pattern when he did this over and over again.

The problem with people who “know” they’re logical in this way is that they make the supremely illogical assumption that, because they value rationality, they’re incapable of being swayed against it by bias, ignorance or emotion. Instead, they interpret the strong feelings produced by these other variables as a gut confirmation of rightness: obviously they feel passionate, not because the subject hits a nerve, but because their deep commitment to rational thought is rising up to confirm their objectivity. But if you display any passion, oh god - that means you’re subjective and your judgement is flawed, and you need to shut up and listen to their superior calming wisdom.
