One of the reasons your tuition is high and classes are getting cut.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME

fact checked and…apparently this is completely correct.

And people wonder and complain when I am “down” on sports.

This is gross.

I love it when my hatred is factually justified.

Rip

And hey FYI, college students - a lot of your classes are taught by people who aren’t even classified as “untenured professors”. Postdocs and lecturers often make anywhere from $30-50K/year. And adjunct instructors? Less than $30K (and that’s if they teach a full course load fall, spring,
and summer) with no benefits and no guarantee they’ll be hired again next semester. For people with PhDs.

I was scrolling down, thinking “yeah, but ALSO” and then PG said it.

Adjuncting gigs range from $2k to $5k per course per semester. And most schools cut you off at 2, because any more would mean they have to start paying benefits, and humanities departments in particular can’t get the budget approval to do that.

So if you’re paying off student loans, it’s not even a matter of living thin; unless you land at a high paying school you can get to from your parents’ basement, there is no way to get by teaching at just one institution. People teach 4-6 classes, at 2 or 3 schools, just to get by (Which also means lots of driving. what a great way to spend your money and time, amirite)

If grad students or contingent faculty at your school are unionizing, SUPPORT THEM. Volunteer with them, if you can. Tell your friends. Tell your *parents*. Institutions care a lot more about what their undergrads think than about most of their grad students (because, again, we aren’t a big donor pool.) Raise a stink. You are more powerful than you know.
