cenedrariva asked: Hi! I write all the time, mostly fanfic, but I was wondering if you have any suggestions about how to include it as experience in a resume? I figure most employers wouldn't count it if they knew what I was writing, regardless of quality.

Good question!

The thing about fanfic is, you’re not paid for doing it, which means you can’t really put it in the “past employment” section of a resume. However, you can quite fairly include it under “relevant skills/other experience/hobbies” or some similar heading and list the ways in which it’s helped you develop as a writer.

Example:

“I belong to an online writing community where members routinely challenge each other to produce new works while acting under various constraints, such as time, word length, the inclusion or exclusion of particular details and adherence to narrative prompts. This has taught me to write quickly and to a high standard about a wide range of scenarios, to meet deadlines, to go outside my comfort zone, and to accept external feedback.”

Hope that helps, and happy job hunting!
