What Happens Next: A Gallimaufry

So does anyone else have, like, resting wellness? I know that’s not a thing, per se, I just don’t know what else to call it when you feel like ten kinds of shit but you don’t look or sound any different than usual to other people, so in order to get them to take your sickness seriously you find yourself, of necessity, affecting a change in voice and posture. Which always makes me feel like I’m faking sick right up until I faint or get a fever or otherwise become demonstrably incapacitated, which in turn means I tend to downplay how crap I’m feeling until or unless I develop a visible symptom. And so I just wondered, is this a me-thing, or does it happen to other people too?

  4. skyboneharper said: Women in particular get indoctrinated with the idea that we must cope with everything without complaint. Showing vulnerability = weakness/whining/incompetence/selfishness/and on and on. So we get very good at “passing” when we’re actually not well at all.

  15. greymichaela said: Definitely not just me. I have to physically exhibit the symptoms I’m going through to get the right response from doctors because apparently I internalize and put on a happy face and no one knows I’m suffering but me. So I have to work really hard to show how much pain I’m in/how shitty I feel, just so docs will take me seriously.
