do you ever have such intense depressive/dissociative feelings that at a certain point your brain goes “WHELP, we appear to have run out of healthy coping mechanisms right now, so let’s just redirect all this crippling self-doubt and suicidal ideation towards a beloved fictional character until we can cope again”

  8. sessifet answered: *raises hand*. My therapist once explained it: something isn’t right, you’re self-aware enough to know your tools are currently not helping, so you “choose” a non (or least) harmful thing to channel into. I hope tomorrow is better for you.

  10. rhube answered: I don’t have the ‘it helping’ part,I don’t think. But I often find that, upon reflection, the story I am currently writing is absolutely about what I’m currently going through. Even is the MC is a 2,000 year old man or a clone full of nanites.

  13. recollection-collection answered: Yeah it does. The same thing happens as a reader going through suicide ideation too. Just seeing it processed externally via a character, something that exists outside of ourselves, helps a lot.
