What Happens Next: A Gallimaufry

melancholic romantic comic cynic. bi & genderqueer. fantasy writer. sysrae on ao3.

an incomplete description of scenes excerpted from novels found in the teenaged library of one dorian of house pavus

amurderof:

It starts very innocent – longing glances, dogeared pages describing bitten lips and flushed cheeks.

It also starts between a man and woman, perhaps because they’re books stolen from his mother, or from Livia. There are a lot of heaving bosoms and assumed bodice ripping: men are strong and hard and their emotions unavailable, and the women are beside themselves unless they are equally strong and hard and in apparent need of taming and being tamed by their assigned love interests.

There’s one book, covered in dust now, spine cracked so that when set flat it falls open to one spread, a racing description of the male lead’s rippling physique, the paragraphs of words describing the sheen of sweat on his muscular back, his shoulders. How thick his thighs appear in his trousers, and how much the heroine desires to be held in those mighty, strong arms.

It’s overwrought and repetitive, but it’s clear that the section was favored heavily over the remainder of the book.
