a note on Pokemon Go
To all the baby boomers confused and aghast at the large number of (comparatively) younger persons currently playing Pokemon Go:
Pokemon has been around for twenty goddamn years, and in that time, it’s never stopped being a Really Big Thing. Widespread emotional investment in the property isn’t new; I was ten when the original game came out, and I’ve still got the GameBoy Colour I saved my pocket- and birthday money to buy for the express purpose of playing it, along with my copies of Pokemon Blue and Gold. I bought my Nintendo 3DS when I was pregnant with my now three year old so I could play Black/White and X/Y. Will I be using that same 3DS to play Moon/Sun come November? You betcha!
Point being, the gamechanging thing about Pokemon Go isn’t that people suddenly give a shit about Pokemon; it’s that our longstanding enjoyment of the franchise has only just become visible to you. For many of us in our late twenties and above - those of us who were the target age of the original game and cartoon - it’s something we’ve carried with us since childhood. For others, it might be a newer thing, though given that the games are now entering their seventh generation, with new cartoon series and movies produced routinely throughout that time, it’s a rare person under thirty-five who’s only just now hearing about it.
So, no, you’re not obliged to understand it or to join in, though should you choose to give it a try, I for one will happily welcome you into the fold. But under the circumstances, it’d be super nice if you stopped bagging on those of us trying to scrape a morsel of enjoyment from life despite the current global political trashfire, fuelled as it is in no small part by the garbage of your generation. Y’know? Just try for a little live and let live.

I’m not a player, but I’m genuinely happy to see people enjoying something on this scale.
