It’s been a week since the Australian election and we still don’t have a result, because the votes are just too close. How close, I hear you ask? Witness the above tally from the AEC, showing that, as of 10.45pm on Friday 8 July 2016, the collective difference between the two major parties nationwide is only 18,525 votes. That is less than 20,000 people in a country with 94% voter enrolment and 15,468,329 people registered to vote.
18,525 people is slightly more than half the population of Lismore, and that’s what our future is hanging on right now. That’s all that’s keeping the current appalling right-wing government in power.
