personal rant incoming

so in april my husband and I moved back to australia after five years in the UK, our three year old in tow. spent about three weeks total crashing with parents and in-laws respectively in first melbourne, then sydney. while we were in melbourne, I collapsed and had to take an ambulance to a hospital half an hour away, because the local centre wanted to get me checked at a proper facility. (I apparently have a weird heart arrhythmia, very intermittent, that means I sometimes do an alarming faint and/or get palpitations.) because we were just back in the country, we didn’t have ambulance coverage, which resulted in a bill for $1690. FUN TIMES.

we then came up to brisbane, where we now live, with as much crap as we could fit in the car to rent an (unfurnished) place in mid-may, having been told our furniture and all our possessions that were being shipped from scotland should arrive in aus by june 10th. we got a great place, and figured we’d try to live in it with minimal stuff rather than continuing to pay to stay in a tiny hotel.

we already have a queen-sized inflatable mattress being shipped to us, so we thought that, rather than double up, we’d buy a cheap fold-out couch and use that for a couple of weeks (the toddler got his own new bed and mattress, having outgrown his old cot anyway). except the fold-out we got *really* can’t sleep the two of us comfortably, so we bought a king single inflatable bed for me to use while my husband stayed on the couch. it was uncomfortable, but we figured hey, we can hold out until the 10th -

and then the moving company said actually, no, we wouldn’t get our stuff until the twentieth. FUN TIMES.

so we figured, right. sleeping in separate rooms is getting really fucking miserable, so we antied up and bought another queen inflatable to sleep on. that was on the 31st. this morning, we were both woken up before 5am because the fucking $70 mattress was deflating from a slow leak. OBVIOUSLY we don’t still have the receipt, so now I have to cart it back to the shop, on foot, with a toddler, plus a copy of my bank statement, and cross my fingers that they’ll replace it.

also, my ambulance bill is due, which my grandmother very kindly offered to take care of. but even though she’s sent us the money, we can’t pay it yet, because my husband’s new job hasn’t paid him yet, and we owe other bills and rent and need the money in the account until it comes through.

on top of this, the moving company has been dicking us the fuck around about when our stuff will get here. last week they said it could happen on monday. monday they said to call tuesday. tuesday they said to call wednesday. today they said it might not be until the middle of next week - not because our stuff isn’t here yet - it’s in the country, it’s been cleared by customs, it just needs a final release for them to deliver it - but because they’re short-staffed and the woman who was meant to put the release documentation through on thursday the week before didn’t do it until friday. understandably, we were not happy about this, and now they’re saying they can maybe do it this week after all - they just don’t know when.

so now I get to go find out if fucking target is gonna replace our brand new broken mattress or not, even though all my joints are aching because we’ve got nearly no furniture and constantly having to haul myself up off the hard floor is murdering my knees.

meanwhile the poor toddler is increasingly confused and sad that we don’t have his scooter or his blocks or his trains, because they’re all in the shipment of things that isn’t fucking here yet, and he doesn’t understand why
