What Happens Next: A Gallimaufry

Anonymous asked: Your Supernatural fanfic recs list is lacking and very disappointing. Sam and Dean *are* the show, which was on for 3 seasons before Castiel came along. The epic love story of the Sam and Dean characters spawned more fanfiction than any other show out there in recent memory and some of it is the best fanfic ever written. That your list excludes Sam/Dean completely shows your total lack of understanding of the show and its history. It reveals you as a biased queer Destiel shipper. *yawn*

Wow. It’s almost like I wasn’t even trying to take into account the shipping tastes of a complete stranger when compiling a list of my personal favourite fanfics! How dare I.

Seriously though: I have nothing against Wincest as an idea; it’s just not something I’ve ever shipped. That doesn’t mean I’ve completely misunderstood the show, and it certainly doesn’t mean I devalue Sam and Dean as brothers, given that I’ve written some pretty lengthy meta about their relationship. But if you want to talk about the history of Supernatural, Castiel has been part of it for seven of ten seasons at this point, appearing in more episodes than any other character besides the Winchesters; even Bobby Singer shows up less often, and nobody tries to argue that he doesn’t matter. And while I’m not trying to diss your ship, given that there are currently more than 41,000 Destiel fics on AO3 compared to about 14,000 Wincest ones, arguing that Wincest has “spawned more fanfiction than any other show out there in recent memory” isn’t even accurate within the Supernatural fandom, let alone in a wider context.

Again, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some amazing Wincest fics available; I’m just kind of puzzled by the assertion that Destiel is a minority ship that constitutes a misapprehension of the show. I mean, look: I used to be a massive fan of Bones, but I hated how Brennan’s character was retconned after the first three seasons, which are the only ones I can now rewatch without cringing. So if you want to argue that the first three seasons of Supernatural are the best and that everything since has gone downhill, then while I might personally disagree, you’re well within your rights to say so. But mathematically, what you’re holding up as the apex of the show constitutes less than half of its entire run; so while you can certainly argue that the first three seasons are the best, you can’t argue that they constitute a representative majority of episodes, just as I can’t argue that early Bones, which is also now into its tenth season, is somehow more fundamentally Bones-ish than anything that’s come after.

Finally, given that Wincest and Destiel are both queer ships, I don’t understand why you’ve opted to try and use the word “queer” as part of an insult here, as per calling me “a biased queer Destiel shipper”. I mean, we’re all in the business of shipping dudes together, so… we’re all queer shippers? Unless you’re actually insulting my personal queerness, given the fact that I’m a bisexual genderqueer woman, in which case, a thousand times no forever

In conclusion: Dean and Sam’s relationship is integral to Supernatural, but viewing it as fraternal rather than romantic doesn’t make me, or anyone else, a bad fan; shipping Destiel (or not!) is a matter of personal preference; and I’m entitled to recommend whatever fics I like.
